Glossary

Desktop applications:

Are usually delivered in the form of installers (e.g. install.exe or setup.exe) and can only be used with computers where they have been installed before.

Advantages: Graphical user interfaces (GUI) of desktop applications provide more features than those of web applications. Customer’s requirements can more easily be met.

Disadvantages: Desktop applications cannot be used from any computer. (E.g. in an internet cafe.) Difficult to maintain.

Web applications:

The GUI is loaded by the browser. No separate installation process is needed.

Advantages: Any computer with a browser can be used without prior installation processes. Maintenance is centralized.

Disadvantages: The GUI has to be adapted to the features supported by the browser. Some features (e.g. complicated mouse operations like in a CAD program) cannot be used.
